Hell, it would seem, has fallen on rather lean times. It used to be that the vast majority of Christians, regardless of denominational affiliation, believed that Hell was a real place where the wicked go when they die. The very thought of the pains and torments of Hell was … More
No one has gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from there (v. 13). Sin caused God to punish the Israelites with fiery serpents that bit and killed many of them (Num. 21:4-9). God provided a remedy, commanding Moses to make a brass serpent, so that anyone who looked on the serpent would be healed of their bite. Likewise, our salvation happens when we look up to Jesus, believing He will save us. God has provided this way for us to be healed of sin’s deadly bite. (vv. 14-15). Those who do not know Christ make choices as though this life is all there is. But that is not the case. This life is only the introduction to eternity. Believing in Christ is more than an intellectual agreement that Jesus is God (v. 16). Believing means putting our trust and confidence in Him, that He alone can save us. It is putting Christ in charge of our present plans and eternal destiny. Believing is both trusting in His words and relying on Him for the power to change. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent Him to save the world (v. 17)! Those with faith in Jesus will not be condemned. Those without faith, however, are already condemned for their lack of faith in Jesus (v. 18). Just as natural light shows up what is unseen, so Christ, the Light, exposes people’s evil deeds (vv. 19-21). It is not intellectual problems but spiritual blindness that keeps people from Christ.
After his conversation with Nicodemus, John tells us that both Jesus and John the Baptist were ministering and baptizing separately. Jesus was in Judea, and John was farther north along the Jordan River near Salim (vv. 22-23). This was before John was thrown into prison (v. 24). We know it was not Jesus Himself who administered the rite of baptism but His disciples who did it following His instructions (4:2). We will pick up here next time…
Application
