What is the largest ancestry in the world? How far can we go back? Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, states that the longest family tree in the world is that of the Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius (551-479 BC). The tree spans more than 80 generations, and includes mo … More
Adam and Eve had a number of sons and daughters as we read in Genesis 5:4, but here we are introduced to their third son, Seth (v. 25). The Hebrew name Seth means the “appointed one.” Eve says that God hath provided or “appointed” a son in the place of slain Abel.
In the book of Luke, chapter 2, the genealogy of Mary the mother of Jesus is traced through the line of Seth. In this passage it says that through his children men began to call on the name of the Lord (v. 26). This should be a big encouragement to Christians who have grown up in a family that didn’t have anything to do with the Lord.
We are never told on our time-line as to where Cain murdered Abel. Judging by Cain’s complaint to God, that “people may kill him,” we get the impression that there were lots of people. After all, God did tell Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply.” It is possible that the murder could have been as late as the 130th year of Adam, since this was the year Seth was born. Seth was the child born after Abel was murdered, and of whom Eve said, “God has granted me another child in the place of Abel, since Cain killed him”.
You have an opportunity to train your children in the things of the Lord in such a way that future generations will continue to love Him and serve Him. It may be that some great evangelists, pastors or missionaries will be in future generations because you began to call on the Lord.
Application
We have a great advantage over Adam and Eve in raising our children. We have the Word of God as our training manual to follow in raising our family. The sad part is that so many Christians do not use it or even refuse to follow its instruction. It is certainly full of many case studies of how not to do as well as how to do. Lord, help me to follow your instruction.
